Offered for sale is this stunning example of a 1960 Austin-Healey Bug Eye Sprite. As one can see from the photos, this vehicle presents beautifully both inside and out. Additionally, this Sprite runs and drives wonderfully! Please read the below details of work that has been done to refresh the car under current and prior ownership.
Work is said to have included repainting the body in Old English White, retrimming the interior in black vinyl, installing front disc brakes, and overhauling the 1,275cc inline-four and four-speed rib-case transmission as well as replacing the wiring harness and black soft top. Additional features include 13″ wire wheels with knock-offs, a Leslie Leston wood-rimmed steering wheel, dual carburetors, and an Elgin camshaft. This Bugeye Sprite is offered with a clean California title in the seller’s name.
The body was refinished in Old English White in 2022 as part of a refurbishment that included replacing the wiring harness and indicator lenses. Features include a replacement black Robbins soft top, a forward-tilting bonnet, chrome trim, and a Monza-style gas cap.
Silver 13″ wire wheels are secured with two-lobe knock-offs and are mounted with 145/80 Achilles 122 tires, which were installed during the refurbishment. Modifications are said to include front disc brakes, a dual-circuit master cylinder, dual-piston rear wheel cylinders, and a narrow-width rear axle housing. The suspension bushings were reportedly replaced along with the brake pads, shoes, and hoses.
The cabin features low-back bucket seats that were reportedly retrimmed, and areas of the carpet have been replaced. Equipment includes a dash-mounted mirror, a cabin heater, and a passenger-side grab handle.
The wood-rimmed Leslie Leston steering wheel fronts Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 100-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 67k miles, about 1700 of which were added by the current owner.
The replacement 1,275cc inline-four is said to have been overhauled under previous ownership with work including replacing the bearings and piston rings, installing an Elgin 264 camshaft and bronze valve guides, re-facing the lifters, and milling the cylinder head .020″.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a replacement four-speed rib-case transmission and a rear differential with a 3.90:1 final drive ratio. The transmission is said to have been overhauled under previous ownership. A modified Harley-Davidson muffler is said to have been installed.
This is an excellent example of a 1960 Austin Healey Bug Eye that is in exceptional running condition. Please do not miss your opportunity to own a beautiful Bug Eye Sprite for a fraction of the cost to restore it.
